This has led some experts to believe that the changes caused by the drug could be permanent for certain individuals.

    The persistence of these side effects may be linked to how the drug affects the central nervous system. While blood hormone levels in former users with lingering symptoms often appear within the normal range, studies of cerebrospinal fluid have revealed altered levels of neurosteroids. This suggests that finasteride may induce changes in the parts of the brain responsible for sexual function. Consequently, medical professionals recommend that both prescribers and patients carefully consider the serious, long-term risks of using a hormonal medication for a strictly cosmetic purpose.
