A Week on a Yellowstone Ranch: The Surprising Transformation of My Body

My gut health soared after indulging in farm-to-table meals at a serene Wyoming ranch.

If you’ve been lost in thoughts of outdoor adventures and the charm of ranch life, you’re sharing the mindset of many. Popular shows like Taylor Sheridan’s “The Madison,” “Marshals,” and the anticipated “Dutton Ranch” have sparked an urge for wanderlust, inviting us to envision our wildlife fantasies. Imagine waking up in a picturesque ranch surrounded by mountains, spending lazy afternoons fly fishing, horseback riding, and enjoying rich, hearty meals.

The great news? You can turn that dream into reality. Grab your cowboy boots and hats and journey with me to Brush Creek Ranch, located in the peaceful expanse of Saratoga, Wyoming. Get ready for incredible experiences like cheese-making, floating on wine rivers, llama picnics, goat yoga, barrel chases, hot springs, and several surprises beyond your expectations.

A week at the ranch taught me about the significance of farm-to-table meals sourced directly from the land. This healthy eating approach transformed not only my mental state but also reset my gut health.

    Life at The Ranch

This remarkable ranch experience ranks among my absolute favorites. As someone enamored with “Yellowstone,” the allure of the American West’s natural beauty is irresistible. Waking each morning in 30,000 acres of untouched wilderness was a dream come true, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and majestic mountains.

After preparing for the day in a comfy room—where the “cowboy policy” means no locks on doors—I made my way to breakfast.

As a devoted foodie, I adore exploring new cuisines, visiting trendy eateries, and testing recipes at home. I find that my sensitive stomach reacts poorly to many foods, often due to preservatives lurking in “healthy/natural” options. At the ranch, however, everything I consumed came straight from the surrounding land.

Breakfast was simultaneously nutritious and indulgent. The menu featured protein-packed meals to fuel my day, including house-pressed juices and luscious smoothies. My preferred order was the Ginger Sunrise juice—freshly pressed with carrots, oranges, golden beets, ginger, and turmeric. For the main, the Warm Grain Bowl was consistently a highlight, featuring quinoa, lentils, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, and topped with a fried egg. On occasion, I also indulged in the Akaushi Hash, which combined braised Akaushi wagyu, fingerling potatoes, carrots, herb pistou, and an egg. Staying fueled was crucial for the active days ahead.

Lunch and dinner reflected the same focus—creating innovative meals from the freshest ingredients plucked directly from the ranch’s sustainable seed-to-table farm. The culinary team creatively incorporates fruits and vegetables directly from the ranch’s expansive greenhouse and often features ranch-raised American Wagyu beef.

The farm is the heart behind all dining experiences, whether it’s savoring marbled ranch-raised beef or aged cheeses made from goats on-site, carefully aged in Brush Creek Distillery barrels.

The Impact on My Gut Health from Fresh, Farm-to-Table Meals

Astonishingly, I experienced significant improvements in my gut health. Bloating lessened, and I felt more energetic than usual—a stark contrast to my typical daily routine. The only other time I noticed such drastic improvement was during my study abroad in Florence, Italy, where I sourced fresh groceries frequently.

My time at the ranch was a profound reminder of the adage, “You are what you eat.” Although scrutinizing ingredient labels at grocery stores and making health-conscious dining choices can be a daunting task, it’s vital for my wellbeing. Inspired by this trip, I’ve committed to cultivating my own vegetables, frequenting local farmers markets, and steering clear of overly processed items. I now focus on reading food labels carefully and aim to prepare most of my meals at home whenever possible. This valuable aspect of ranch life is a daily practice for me now.
