Chubby Checker really knew what he was talking about when he urged us all to “do the twist.” It turns out that twisting exercises pack a powerful punch when it comes to fitness, offering a surprising array of benefits. Not only do they improve our flexibility, but they also strengthen the back muscles, lengthen the spine, and can even help ease nagging back pain. On top of that, twisting movements can aid in digestion, making them a versatile addition to your wellness routine. According to The Yoga Institute, these twists feel delightful as you engage your body in movement, connecting you to a sense of relief and relaxation.

Imagine incorporating some movements where you reach across the body, and you’ve crafted a routine that targets muscle relaxation and tension release – exactly what we need after long hours at a desk or those intense workout sessions. Or Artzi, a certified personal trainer and a lead group fitness instructor at Equinox, is a pro at creating just this kind of routine. His platform, Orriors, showcases effective exercises that are easily accessible, allowing everyone to tap into the benefits of fitness, regardless of their skill level.

When it comes to working out, you don’t have to commit hours on end. You can do each of the following exercises for just 30 to 60 seconds. Just one round, that’s all it takes to feel the difference.

First up, let’s do the Crab Reach (alternating sides).

    1. Start off by sitting comfortably on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat.
    2. Place your left hand about a foot behind you on the ground, fingers pointing away, while your right elbow rests on your right thigh, palm facing up toward the ceiling.
    3. Engage your feet into the floor and push your hips upwards until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
    4. As you do this, arch your back to reach your right arm over your right shoulder.
    5. Slowly pop back to the starting position and switch sides.

Now let’s dive into the Spinal Twist:

    1. Lie flat on your back with your left leg extended out straight and place your right foot flat on the ground.
    2. Let your right leg gently drop across your left leg and towards the floor.
    3. Turn your head to the right and, if it feels good, apply light pressure on your right knee with your left hand.
    4. Hold the position to really let the stretch sink in before switching to the other side.

Next, try a Seated Hamstring Stretch to really feel that tension melt away:

    1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you, making sure your knees and heels are touching.
    2. Hinge at your hips and fold your torso forward, keeping your back as flat as possible.
    3. Exhale as you work on deepening the stretch, reaching for your toes if you can.
    4. Hold this position for as long as you’d like.

Now let’s get into the Cat-Cow Pose, a fantastic way to mobilize your spine:

    1. Get on all fours with your knees under your hips and hands under your shoulders, ensuring alignment.
    2. Slowly arch your back while dropping your belly towards the floor, lifting your gaze up (this is cow pose).
    3. Transition into a rounded back, tucking your chin to your chest (this is cat pose).
    4. Keep flowing between these poses at your own pace.

Next, tackle the World’s Greatest Stretch; it’s as challenging as it is rewarding:

    1. Start in a high plank position, with your feet hip-width apart and your shoulders stacked directly over your wrists.
    2. Step your right foot toward the outside of your right hand.
    3. Keeping your hips steady, lift your right hand towards the ceiling while rotating your chest toward your right leg. Let your gaze follow your fingertips.
    4. Return your right hand back to the floor and push your right leg back into the plank.
    5. Switch sides and repeat, alternating back and forth.

Finally, finish strong with the Prone Pec Stretch:

    1. Lie face down with your arms stretched out to the sides and your legs straight behind you.
    2. Roll onto your right side to stretch out your pecs gently while pressing down on your right side.
    3. Bend your left knee and place your left foot on the ground behind you. Keep your right leg straight.
    4. Hold for the specified duration before switching sides.

Taking just a few moments for self-care through these simple stretches can dramatically enhance your overall well-being. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with life, but incorporating this mobility routine into your day may be the perfect antidote. You deserve to feel good in your body and to unwind from the daily grind. Let’s twist, stretch, and breathe our way to better health!
